Tips For A Simply Elegant Holiday Table

Season’s Greetings! We are definitely in countdown mode and the big day is just around the corner. For many of us the dinner table will be much less crowded this year but a beautiful table is an integral part of the celebration and so worth it when you sit down to dine. This week I share some tips for setting a tablescape that will make your Christmas dinner that much more festive.

A table cloth brings a more formal look to the space while table runners on their own provide a more informal, casual vibe. Runners can be placed lengthwise or cross wise on the table. And for a chic layered look, consider layering table runners over a table cloth.

While place mats have long been the usual addition to the dining table, chargers add a touch of elegance and depth and anchor each place setting. Available in round or square, as well as a variety of finishes and colours, the charger you select depends on how it will show off your dishes. Rather than just having a salad plate and soup bowl on the charger which is the traditional approach, bring additional depth and visual interest by layering all needed dishware on the charger. Decor Tip! Interspersing complementary solid colours or using mismatched pieces brings a chic, unexpected and playful touch to the table and allows additional colour and pattern to be included.

Finish off your place settings with napkins and this is one celebration that requires linen napkins! Napkins are available in a wide range of patterns and textures including seasonal words and quotes – much more fun and festive! One of the looks I love is layering two napkins together. Casually laid on an angle across the place setting, the result brings additional shape and form to your table. Decor Tip! For a festive table use napkin rings with some sparkle and shine – they are like jewellery for your table.

Ensure your centrepiece incorporates the colours of your dishes and linens for a coordinated look and ensure it includes items of various heights to provide scale and form and texture for depth and vitality. Of course, no holiday celebration is complete without candles for the soft warm light they provide. For a centrepiece that can extend beyond on the holidays and into the new year, consider using items that are not specifically holiday specific such as trees, snowmen or snow flakes.

I hope these tips are helpful as you plan and set your dining table and allow you to relax and enjoy good food, good conversation and creating new memories. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and blessed 2021.
