Lighting and Decorating Your Outdoor Rooms

Happy Friday to you all! The past few weeks I have shared information and ideas for creating beautiful outdoor rooms that you will want to spend as much time as possible in. This week I want to share ideas for lighting and decorating your outdoor spaces that will add those final touches and enable you to use them long after the sun has gone down.

Lighting

While outdoor spaces do not require much light during the day, there will be times when you will remain outside well into the evening. For those occasions, string lights and outdoor lamps are excellent options for ensuring overall lighting. String lights can be used to outline a railing, a trellis or the inside of your umbrella or canopy adding a touch of sparkle. Adding a couple of lamps to the space will bring light to the conversation level and add texture and form.

To enhance the ambience and add a soft glow, candles and lanterns are perfect choices. Choose candle lanterns of various heights to create a centrepiece and taller ones for setting on the patio – perhaps as a corner display or grouped at the end of the sofa.

Decor

Like the indoor spaces of your home, outdoor spaces need decor accessories to complete the look and there are many options available today. Furniture cushions and throw pillows are a colourful way to add depth, texture and comfort and add in a throw or two for the cooler evenings. A basket woven of natural materials to hold the throws is practical but also another way to add interest and texture. Plants are an ideal way to fill out a corner and a grouping can also function as a screen if necessary. Metal or ceramic stools are multi-functionality as they can be used as additional seating, plant stands or occasional tables. Available in a wide range of styles and colours, they add function, shape and texture.

Creating your outdoor rooms and can be a fun and inspiring way in which to make the most of the space available as well as reflect your summer style. Once you have created your outdoor oasis, make the most of every moment available to relax and enjoy it whether you are spending a quiet afternoon alone or entertaining family and friends long into the evening.
